I suppose this is what "cultural appropriation" is. It's not that people outside the particular generative group enjoy the culture that that group produces, but first they must degrade that cultural output (cheapening it makes it easier to consume), then sanitise that cultural "product" of the elements and relations to things which made it so interesting in the first place.

@Cocoron We were discussing during a “Pint of Science” event. Part of reappropriation is about what it changes for the original item. It's not just a matter of being a “good, open-minded person”. It's about having an unwarranted impact on a practice. Paul Simon, Ry Cooder, and Herbie Hancock all took part in activities which changed the meaning of musical traditions. Because, power.
